Place Bellecour, the meeting point
The vast Place Bellecour is the kilometre zero for the people of Lyon: this is where you meet, under the equestrian statue of Louis XIV. You enjoy the open sky between the red buildings, then walk down towards Place Antonin-Poncet and its lonely bell tower. A drink on a terrace, a wander through the nearby boutiques, and conversation flows without effort.
Terreaux and opera, a city that hums
To the north, Place des Terreaux brings together the Bartholdi fountain and its spirited horses, the baroque city hall and the Fine Arts museum. Lyon Opera, redesigned by Jean Nouvel, watches a few steps away with its dark vaulted roof and dancers rehearsing behind the glass. You share a coffee, then catch a concert or a ballet the same evening.
Rue de la République, the lively artery
Linking Bellecour to the Terreaux, Rue de la République is the shopping artery that beats with the city. People from Lyon call it the Rue de la Ré. You pass through the covered passages of the centre, Place des Jacobins and its white fountain, then stop at a patisserie to share a pink praline tart. On Lyad, members from the Presqu’île share their favourite spots; it is up to you to find someone to visit them with.
